Dr.TEJAL DALAL M.S (Ophthal.), member of american academy of cataract and refractive surgery, founder and managing director of tej eye center. Born and raised in doctor’s family, Dr. Tejal Dalal M.S (Ophthal.) is a third-generation doctor with excellence and trust as her core values. She is an expert ophthalmologist, diligent social worker and a noble individual.

At an early age, she had proactively taken up the role of a writer for blind students. This simple activity triggered her determination to become an ophthalmologist and work for avoidable blindness for her entire life. After completing Master in Surgery (M.S.) from M & J Institute of Ophthalmology (Gujarat University), Dr. Dalal started her career as Assistant Professor in ophthalmology at M.P. Shah Medical College, Jamnagar. After completing her Fellowship in Cataract and IOL implantation, Dr. Tejal Dalal worked as Head of Ophthalmology unit at Civil Hospital, Gandhinagar and Technical Advisor for District Blindness Control Society, Gandhinagar.

Since the beginning of her medical journey, Dr. Dalal has extended her services to the needy and under privileged sections of the society. She worked in rural areas like various Dudhmandalis in villages, trained Govt. medical officers and Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) workers on avoidable blindness. She has arranged programs/conferences, free diagnostic camps with District health offices and NGOs on World sight day and World Diabetes Day. She has also extended her expertise to Trust hospitals by operating cataract in poor children.

Cataract surgery and IOL implantation is her forte. She continuously strives for medical treatment advancement and preventive care techniques. Dr. Dalal has been educated and trained across prestigious institutions in India, US and UE. She has been visiting centers of excellence worldwide like Cincinnati Eye Institute Ohio USA, Mackool Eye Institute NY, Seeta Eye Center NY to explore breakthrough eye care innovations and introduce new equipments, technology and techniques in her work. She is a distinguished member of various local and international ophthalmic societies all over the world such as All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS), American Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) and many more.

Dr. Tejal Dalal is the founder and director of Tej Eye Center (TEC) - a super specialty eye hospital network of 5 branches across Gujarat. Dr. Dalal had founded TEC in Gandhinagar with the noble objective of "best in class eye care for everyone". Under her leadership and fueled by her endless enthusiasm for eye care, TEC has grown significantly and today it is celebrating 20 years of excellence in eye care with more than 5 lac plus happy patients and over 50,000 cataract surgeries. TEC was ranked as best eye hospital in Ahmedabad by Times of India (TOI) Health Survey 2016. It is on the panel of reputed companies like ONGC, IIFCO, Arvind, BSNL, CGHS, SBI, Ayushman Bharat, Urban bank, Sports Authority of India, BSF, CRPF and many more. She is an active member of GSPC & GIPL “Sexual harassment of women committee”.

Social Impact

Dr. Dalal has made significant strides in social initiatives as well - for avoidable blindness, eye donations, tele-medicine and government outreach programs. She believes that 80% of blindness can either be prevented or treated if detected in time. In pursuance of "Vision for everyone", Dr. Dalal and team TEC has undertaken numerous social initiatives every year like 400 + educational lectures on Avoidable Blindness Awareness, 3000 + free eye and diabetes checkup across villages, residential societies and corporates, vision screening camps in more than 200 schools in Ahmedabad & Gandhinagar. Recently we have partnered with ICICI bank to digitally connect 250 + villages in Gujarat and spread awareness of avoidable blindness to famers and women in coming six months.

Dr. Dalal has worked with state and central govt. to allow paramedical staff to collect corneas from donors resulting in tremendous increase of eye donations in villages, expanding employment for paramedical staff and enabling eye transplants for many people. She took initiative and organized Rally on 10th October 2013 in Gandhinagar to create awareness for Eye Donation. The rally was flagged off by Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister of Gujarat Shri Nitinbhai Patel.

Recently during Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2019, TEC has signed an MOU with Health & Family Welfare Department of Govt. of Gujarat for Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) screening in rural and urban population using Tele-medicine. Diabetic Retinopathy is the leading cause of Avoidable blindness among working-age diabetics worldwide - however, early detection and timely treatment can reduce the risk of preventable blindness by 95%. Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) free India initiative has been successfully running for last 1 year in various CHCs PHCs and UHCs of govt. setup using fundus camera. We have extended this program to various departments like police, education, transport; Jilla Panchyat, Gandhinagar; Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and banks.

Along with her team, she is participating in national & international Clinical Research for the treatment of eye disorders and diseases and collaborating with different pharmaceutical companies and research centers for the same. To provide world-class medical needs to patients, all key hospital processes are defined to meet NABH standards. Also, she has started in-house optical outlets- “Spectacular world” that provides technically correct prescription spectacle, a value added service which has received an overwhelming response from patients. Dr. Tejal Dalal has started an initiative “Vision for Everyone” where she encourages people to donate their old frames which can be refitted with corrective glasses to help needy children and elderly.

TEC has come up with screen time control app for parents wherein they can shut down mobile screen at pre-decided time. A free Helpline number 08046878307 is activated to answer questions related to eye problems.

Currently, Dr. Tejal Dalal and TEC team is focused on the new state–of-art TEC Eye Hospital in Sector 6, Gandhinagar which has all eye care facilities under one roof with latest equipments and infrastructure like class 100, joint less modular OT with HEPA filters and positive air pressure. Other facilities include library, conference hall, auditorium, boardroom, optical and laboratory facilities and Glaucoma & Diabetes clinics. It is going to be an important landmark and will place Gandhinagar on world map for best in eye care, Research and medical tourism.

Dr. Dalal is driving numerous other initiatives focused on improving the quality, effectiveness and affordability of eye care in India. Some of her plans include :

  • MOUs with other governments like Africa for DR programs similar as India
  • Promote medical tourism for multifocal cataract surgeries and Bladeless lasik
  • Establish advanced eye care centers across India and abroad.
